What can be done if I no longer have the keys to the vehicle i want to scrap?

You will need to provide us with evidence that you are the owner of the vehicle. Once we are satisfied that you are the lawful owner we will be able to access the vehicle and process it for scrapping in our Colchester scrap site.

What if my car no longer can start or is immobilised?

We often have to recover vehicles for scrap which are considered no longer roadworthy, this could be for a number of reasons but usually due to it has not been used for a long period of time. We are able to lift vehicles onto our fleet of recovery trucks without needed to start them or drive them. Scrapping your car with Assington Autos will still be hassle free.

My car has had some parts removed?

When you complete the online form or call us, please inform us of the parts you are aware that our missing so that we can give you a accurate price for your scrap car. Failure to let us know it is incomplete will effect price offered and can make your valuation null and void.

Who will let the DVLA know that I have scrapped my vehicle?

Assington Autos will complete all the necessary paperwork. A Certificate of Destruction with be sent to the DVLA. You will need to retain section 9 of the V5, which will require you to complete and send to the DVLA. The quicker this is done the sooner it is registered as scrapped with the DVLA.

What do I do if the car is still has Road Tax remaining?

Once the DVLA receives the paperwork to inform them the vehicle has been scrapped, they will send you a refund for any period of unused road tax. You do not need to do anything extra.

What do I do once I have booked the collection?

Please ensure that you have taken all of your possessions from the vehicle before we arrive and ensure we can access the vehicle.  You will then need to complete section 9 of the V5 and send it to the DVLA.

Assington Autos has a team of recovery vehicles who work days, evenings and weekends, so we are confident in finding a convenient time to collect your vehicle for scrap.  We make our scrap my car process as painless as possible and will work around you.

Will a Certificate of destruction be issued by you?

We will always issue a Certificate of Destruction as this is your proof that your vehicle has been scrapped in a lawful and environmentally friendly way.

How quickly do you collect the vehicle to be scrapped?

The time will vary based on location, generally within 24 – 48 hours we can collect.

Are you a fully licenced for scrapping vehicles?

Assington Autos is licensed by the Environmental Agency and associated councils.

I have lost my V5 for the vehicle for scrapping?

It is possible to scrap your car without a V5.  You will need to provide some form of proof of ownership, this could be a recent tax reminder letter or SORN document.

I would like to retain my cherished registration?

You will need to complete a V778 document.  Once this has been received you can process your vehicle whilst you retain the registration number.

Can I get cash for my scrap car?

Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, introduced October 2014 to combat metal theft, particularly copper from railway lines, it is illegal for anyone to pay cash for scrap cars. Read More: Scrap Cars for Cash
