Can I scrap a car for cash?

Is it possible to scrap a car for cash?

Currently, it is illegal to scrap your car for cash. This is done as a preventative measure against car theft. If you find yourself dealing with a scrapping company that states you can scrap a car for cash with them, this is a good sign you are working with an illegal business.

You should be careful of trusting any scrapping site that promises you cash for your scrap car. Additionally, you will need to notify the DVLA that you are taking your car to be scrapped otherwise you put yourself at risk of being fined. The current fine is up to £1,000.

Paying for scrap cars in cash is illegal

Beware of unexpected traders and unscrupulous scrap dealers who turn up or haggle on the doorstep. If you do not have the vehicle registration document, ignore possible suggestions that the scrap price offered has to be reduced by a further £25 due to a supposed extra DVLA fee.  When scrapping vehicles, DVLA will accept a simple written confirmation. See our post about scrapping a car without your V5C Document.

If in doubt or if you do not receive any communication from DVLA within four weeks, motoring experts advise contacting the agency either online or via their telephone helpdesk service.

We do not accept cash at Assignton Autos to scrap your car. We only will scrap your car using a method that you are comfortable with, whether that is a cheque or a bank transfer we only use secure payment methods.

Beware of scrap merchants that offer to scrap your car for cash. You may regret your choice and face serious consequences.
